Problem
The 2018 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) report revealed troubling facts about violence against women in Nigeria. It showed that 31% of Nigerian women aged 15 to 49 have experienced physical violence, and 9% have faced sexual violence. Additionally, 36% of ever-married women reported spousal violence (SV), and at least 20% underwent Female Genital Mutilation.
These numbers highlight a serious issue worsened by low awareness and acceptance of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). For example, some communities don’t acknowledge marital rape, and forced early marriages are still common, affecting 43% of Nigerian women before they turn 18. During the pandemic and lockdowns, GBV cases, including rape and molestation, surged. From January to June 2020, the National Human Rights Commission received 790 complaints affecting over 950 victims. Many GBV victims don’t seek help due to cultural norms, lack of awareness about reporting, and flaws in the justice system.
